First Time Mom Baby Registry Essentials

My List of Baby Registry Essentials for the First Time Mom

When I first found out I was going to be a mom, I was 19. I had no idea what I was doing, what I needed or what to even expect. There was so many new things I had to learn and figure out. Being a first-time mom I had no idea what items to put on my baby registry. Thats why I’m going to share my First Time Mom Baby Registry Essentials with you that I used with my last baby.

Having a newborn baby at home and having everything you need can seem scary and overwhelming.

When you think of everything that you need and everything that you want to buy just take care of your new little one, it’s easy to get distracted and overwhelmed because let’s face it, newborn babies are a lot of work, and they need a ton of things.

You need clothes, diapers, wipes, bottles, diaper bags, hats, mittens, pacifiers, creams and lotions. The list goes on and on and on…

Being a first-time mom and having your first ever baby shower you try to put everything that you can think of on your registry. Everything right down to nursing pads and nipple creams.

Some of it can seem embarrassing but believe me, after you’ve given birth the first time you won’t be embarrassed of much anymore. (You’re going to be having parts of you seen by a dozen doctors and people then you’ve ever have before.)

You’re getting your baby registry all put together, going over every item and every detail of it to make sure you’re not missing anything. I mean, when baby gets here you won’t have much time to think about anything, so you want to make sure you have all of the essentials ready to go.

Am I putting too much on my registry?

I my opinion I don’t think you can ever have too much. I would rather have too much that not enough when it comes to the days where I’m getting no sleep, and I can’t even think anymore.

But do I really need that?

With each baby I had my list of essentials got smaller and smaller. There are so many things that I thought I would need with my first and come to find out I never used a bunch of it.

Wouldn’t you rather have items on your list that you could use double of, or benefit from having extra?

I know I would..

Things like diapers and wipes, diaper rash creams, bottles and nipples, burp clothes and sleepers. Things that you won’t only use every single day, multiples times a day but you can have a little supply for when things get worn out and used.

I’ve come up with a list that I used for my last baby. Things that I thought were essential and would be used. I came up with things that I knew would be needed whether it be in the first month or the first year. A list that will hopefully help you put your registry together and be all set for you little one to arrive.

Clothing

When I had all 4 of my kids, they were in onzies or sleepers 95% of the time. They’re easy to change, comfy and just convenient. You’ll want extra of those. Maybe some cute outfits but I benefited the most from onzies and sleepers. Whatever time of the year it is, plan on how the weather will be on what clothing items you’ll want.

  • onzies
  • sleepers
  • receiving blankets used for swaddling
  • hats
  • mittens
  • socks
  • a heavier hoodie or light jacket
  • pants or sweatpants

Feeding

You can add things that will get used for the next year or two. No, you won’t use plates and sippy cups right as a newborn but within the year, which will come in what seems like a minute, you’ll be ready for them.

  • bottles
  • extra nipples
  • bibs
  • burp cloths
  • suction cup plates and dishes
  • toddler silverware
  • sippy cups
  • bottle cleaner
  • a drying rack for bottles
  • bottle warmer
  • bottle bag
  • pacifier

Diapering

Put diapers in every size! My babies grew out of newborn diapers and 1s so quickly. With my last one I didn’t even ask for Newborn diapers, I went straight to 1’s. You can never have too many diapers. I’m not sure what stores still do it, but I was able to take back unopened packs and exchange them for a different size at Walmart or Target.

  • diapers (multiple sizes)
  • wipes
  • A&D ointment or diaper rash cream
  • diaper bag or 2 (you can always keep one ready in the car in case you rush out and forget one)
  • wipe warmer (just in case)

Bathing

Finding baby wash can turn out to be tricky and you won’t really know until you use them. We found we couldn’t use certain ones because they would break our babies out in rashes. To start, try a gentle fragrance free one. Same with the lotion, try to find a gentle formula that is easy on baby’s skin.

  • baby wash
  • tear free shampoo
  • wash cloths
  • hooded towel
  • transitioning baby bathtub
  • spout cover
  • nonslip mat for in the tub
  • lotion

Baby Gear

This is one that I wasn’t one to put the big things on. I don’t know about you, but I just feel like the stroller and baby carrier is something that I could get myself. A pack and play along with the height chair were also on my list of not being sure but if you want to put them on feel free to! We were fortunate enough though and my parents bought us our bigger items.

  • Bassinet (if you don’t want a bassinet, a pack and play works too)
  • Pack and Play (one with the adjustable height bottom)
  • Transitioning Highchair
  • Swing
  • Play Mat
  • Teethers
  • Books
  • First Year toys
  • Boppy Pillow
  • Humidifier
  • White Noise Machine
  • Fitted Crib Sheets
  • Pack and Play Sheets
  • Bassinet Sheets

Nursing

I didn’t nurse, but I exclusively pumped with my last baby for the first 3 months, so I still needed all the essentials. Don’t be afraid to put these on your list! They’re still needed to feed your baby! Check with your insurance before you go out and buy a pump as well!

  • nursing pads
  • nipple cream
  • milk freezer bags
  • extra pump parts
  • sanitizing wipes
  • nursing cover
  • pumping bag
  • portable pump

These are all the things that I used and would use again if we ever decided to add to our family. It’s not too much but it’s just enough to make welcoming your little one just a little more enjoyable.

I know it’s an exciting time being pregnant for the first time and wanting to buy all the things. That is okay!

But if you’re looking for a simple list with the most needed items, I hope my essentials are just as beneficial to you as they were for us!
