Is It Bedtime Yet Because I’m A Tired Mother
It’s been a long day. You’ve picked a million toys up off the floor, cleaned up 25 messes of food or drinks, heard the word momma about 100 times, you’ve changed 10 diapers 2 of which are poop. You’ve been thrown up and snotted on. Fed a hungry child the endless snacks because they’re always hungry. Ran to the grocery store, taken the dogs out, thrown in 3 loads of laundry. You’ve played with every toy your kid has with them and gone through every board game at least 3 times. Put the marble set together and built tracks with the Legos. All you can think of is it 7:30pm and is it bedtime yet?
Wait, what??
It’s only noon!
How can I be this tired and looking forward to bedtime and it’s not even 5:00 yet. How can it feel like I’ve had a 14-hour shift of work in less than 6 hours? This can’t be right. The clock has to be broken.
Is the clock broken?
The clock has to have stopped. It’s can’t only be 12:00!
But it is…
Your feral children have taken every ounce of energy you have, and they managed to do it with a smile on their faces before lunch time.
They want you to build marble run races 10 different ways just to run away and start playing with something else.
They bring you the block table to build a track just to put the ball down it one time and start putting it away.
The Trouble game comes out for you to mind beaten by a 6 year old who likes to strategize his way to the doubles.
You have to go through every single hot wheels car they’ve collected and pick 5 for them to race.
“Mom I’m hungry” are 3 of the most usee words you hear all day. How can you be hungry you just had lunch, granola bar, a yogurt and pudding, raisons, you snuck in some cookies in there too. What more can you eat?
All that food made him poop 3 times now. No more fruit or raisons today you say but you give in because that’s better than more cookies right.
What’s that? You want to color. Okay lets color. No not on the walls or tv, we have to color on the paper. They don’t want to color on the paper, so we’re done coloring. For now.
“Mom look at me” as he’s spinning in circles after you’ve told him 100 times not to do that cause he’s accident prone and manages to hit every corner in the house with his head.
The dogs have to go out again….lets go!
You go to the bathroom and realize that you forgot to put the clean clothes in the dryer so I guess I should run the washer again. Fingers crossed I hear it go off when it’s done.
You’re thirsty? Let’s get you something to drink. They see the applesauce in the fridge and decide they’re all of a sudden hungry again.
Oh look he pooped again from eating that applesauce.
Marbles! Marbles! Marbles! Looks like we’re putting the marble track together, one more time.
You’re overstimulated, irritated and that 3rd cup of coffee isn’t working..
Is It Bedtime Yet???
You’re exhausted by the end of the day.
All you want is to tuck them in their cozy beds and have an hour to yourself.
An hour to unwind. Relax. Not think about anything.
An hour of peace and quiet where you have no one to tend to but yourself.
Is it bedtime yet?
You find yourself counting down the hours and then the minutes till you can start your bedtime routine.
You can finally tell your kids it’s time to wind down and start to settle because it’s almost time to go to sleep.
Bedtime is so close you don’t know what to do with yourself because you’re just waiting for 7:30 to hit.
It’s finally bedtime!
The time is here, and you can finally say, “come on, let’s go brush our teeth and go to bed.”
The time you’ve been waiting for since noon.
Moments when you can sit and do whatever you want to do.
Now you’re sitting there wondering about the day.
After feeling the exhaustion and the guilt of counting down the minutes till bedtime.
Wondering should I be this tired?
Is it normal to be ready for bedtime half way through the day?
Do other moms count down the hours until they get quiet time to themselves at night?
Yes, Yes We Do
If you’re not exhausted and worn out halfway through your day, please let me know your secret! More days than not I find myself just thinking about putting them down for the night and being able to sit on the couch reading, writing, scrolling, whatever it is you do.
Not having anyone to tend to or care for. Being able to just let my mind rest and not thinking about someone getting hurt or if they’re hungry.
Getting lost in a book or finally finishing a movie you started the night before.
Having that time at night to clear your mind and get ready for the next day.
Feeling irrigated and exhausted is a normal part of being a mother.
Looking forward to bedtime is a normal part of being a mother.
Wanting to have peace and quiet an hour before you go to sleep is normal.
And it is 100% okay for you to feel this way!
